AIRPORT CITY, the 60 acre business park planned for Manchester Airport is likely to go ahead. The £600m development could create 70,000 jobs, with businesses benefiting from the close proximity to the airport. The development is based on similar European sites but is the first planned for the UK. Plans will be submitted by the end of the year with the first phase of building set to begin in 2012.

SHOOTINGS IN GREATER MANCHESTER have fallen by 77 per cent in the past year, according to Greater Manchester Police. Between April 2010 and March this year there were three shootings compared to thirteen during the previous twelve months. Overall reported crime has fallen to the lowest level since the turn of the new millennium.

FARMER FAMOUS FOR ACCENT: A Bury farmer has been inundated with phone calls from people keen to hear his broad Oldham accent on his answering machine message. John Lees, 80, recorded the machine message for his farm shop in Walmersley and said it never occurred to him that his accent would be of interest to people as he has "had the same voice ever since I could talk".

SUBMARINE SAILOR IN COURT OVER SHOOTING: Ryan Samuel Donovan, has appeared at Southampton Magistrates court today charged with the murder of Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux, from Wigan, and three counts of attempted murder after the shooting aboard the nuclear submarine, HMS Astute, in Southampton on 8 April. Donovan is scheduled to appear at Winchester Crown Court on Wednesday.

This week in 1572: the Court Leet appointed officers to drive swine (kept in the streets by many Mancunians) to forage at Collyhurst each day.
