MYSTERY BULLET IN CHORLTON: Detectives are trying to find out why a 61-year-old man was apparently shot in the eye while gardening at his home on Grindley Avenue in Chorlton. Peter Hesford was admitted to hospital with a serious eye injury last month after collapsing, but a CT scan revealed an object lodged in his brain, which is believed to be a bullet. Mr Hesford remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital, but can't remember what happened to him.

MANCHESTER UNITED FANS protested outside Old Trafford this weekend as part of a mass protest against the club's American owners, the Glazers. Smoke bombs were set off outside the club's megastore by protesters who congregated outside the ground ahead of the final game of the season against Stoke.

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT MP, JOHN LEECH is lodging a formal complaint over the way the election ballot was handled in the Withington constituency last week. Angry scenes erupted when people queuing to vote were turned away at 10pm. John Leech, who was re-elected by a 1,850 majority, is writing to the Electoral Commission.

MORE THAN 2,000 CRIMES AGAINST STUDENTS, were committed in just two months in Greater Manchester. The figures cover January 1 to March 6 where offences included grievous bodily harm, harassment, robbery and burglary. More than 90,000 students attend universities in Greater Manchester each year. Supt John Graves of Greater Manchester Police said: “Numerous operations that are purely concerned with tackling student crime have been running throughout the year.”

Out of the window weather forecast: Another grey day.
