City news in 250 words: Friday 6 May

Reds in clover, red in trouble and digital falcons

City news in 250 words: Friday 6 May

MANCHESTER is almost all red, tinged with the merest hint of yellow. Voters went to the polls on Thursday 5 May to choose one third of the council (one of the three seats in each ward) plus a councillor to fill an additional vacancy in Burnage. The Lib Dems got trounced not winning a single seat, even their leader Simon Ashley was ousted. The composition of the council is now: Labour 75, Liberal Democrat 20, Independent one.

GREATER MANCHESTER is also more red. The Liberal Democrats have lost control of Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council with defeat in four seats. The Conservative Party gained two seats and Labour three, with an independent councillor also losing. Intriguingly the Lib Dems although still the largest single party on the council have ruled out a coalition with the Conservatives. Labour took overall control of Bolton and Oldham.

IT’S WHAT the world’s been waiting for. Manchester birds are going tweet tweet. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has given the city centre’s nesting Peregrine Falcon’s their own Twitter page. Apparently the RSPB having set up a webcam, hope the birds will tweet photographs automatically by their movement on the nest.

TROUBLED Ravel Morrison, the young United prodigy, has been charged with assault and criminal damage, according to the MEN. He’s accused, apparently, of assaulting his girlfriend and throwing her mobile phone from a window. The events took place this April. Morrison is one of the homegrown players at United tipped for greatness.

Fact of the Day: This week in 1821 the Manchester Guardian newspaper was first published. John Edward Taylor was the editor and a commitment was made to liberal reform.
