FACE TRACKERS FOR PHONES: Scientists at The University of Manchester have developed software for mobile phones that can track your facial features in real-time. Dr Phil Tresadern said: "Our model accurately tracks a number of landmarks on and around the face.” The team believes face tracking could eventually replace passwords and PIN numbers to log into internet sites from a mobile phone.
PORTABLE BREAST SCANNERS: Another scientific development at Manchester University this week, is a portable scanner that could allow women to perform their own breast scans. The scanner is able to show, in a second, the presence of tumours in the breast on a computer. Inventor, Professor Wu said: “The system has great potential to bring a new way for breast cancer diagnosis.”
GREATER MANCHESTER GOLD DIGGERS: Opportunists have dug so far into the side of a Greater Manchester valley, £40,000 has had to be spent to prevent a landslide, Tameside Council has said. The treasure hunters have dug behind homes in Ashton-under-Lyne on an area which was a landfill site in Victorian times. The council has now taken down trees and put up fences to try and keep the ground secure.
A fair day. Make the most of it as next week will feel more wintery. The clocks go back on Sunday, remember.
