POLICE SERGEANT QUITS AFTER RAPE CHARGE: A Greater Manchester police sergeant has resigned after being charged with rape. Sergeant Peter Jee, 36, was accused of raping a mentally ill woman he had been sent to help in Rusholme, last August. Mr Jee appeared in court charged with misconduct in public office and rape. The case was later adjourned and Mr Jee will now appear in Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Thursday 17 February.

MANCHESTER TEACHER SENDS STUDENTS TO OXBRIDGE: Assistant principal at Xaverian College, Peter Birch, has helped 12 students gain University offers at Oxbridge. Students were given extra tutoring to help boost confidence and self-assurance. The students were part of the 'stretch and challenge' scheme targeted at gifted students which helps fast-track Oxbridge applications.

CHILDREN FACE BUS FARE RISE: Children will soon see a rise in bus fares as transport chiefs battle to protect the cuts. The rise in concessionary fares, which will also affect some pensioners and disabled people, will bring in £25m over the next three years. From April, fares will increase from 80p for any journey to half of the full fare.

COLM TOIBIN TO TAKE OVER UNIVERSITY ROLE: Irish writer Colm Toibin will take over from Martin Amis in September as Professor of creative writing. Amis taught at Manchester University for the previous four years, and will leave to move to New York with his wife. Twice nominated for the booker prize, Toibin said he was “looking forward to starting in Manchester in September”.

Out of the window weather forecast: Cold winds, blue skies and sunny additions.
