MANCHESTER CONFIDENTIAL won Magazine of the Year award last night at marketing and pr news website How-do's awards. Cheshire Life was a joint winner as well. At Manchester Confidential we do at least thirty pieces of independent editorial every week. Every week. Independent. Saying what we want. And allowing criticism of our articles and editorial policy by allowing people to rant on the site. Awards are fine and dandy but it's the independence, and what we do, that really makes us proud. The most important thing is to get better at it. Enough of the soapbox.

THE LATE LS LOWRY reached £5.6m at auction. Or rather his painting, ‘The Football Match’, from 1949, did. Guess what: the painting features hundreds of the miserablist's stick figures watching a game of footie in a wasteland, under leaden skies, next to some terraced houses, near some mills. The previous Lowry price record was achieved by ‘Good Friday, Daisy Nook’,  painted in 1946, in 2007 which sold for £3.77m.

BOLTON AND STOCKPORT both want to be cities. The towns have submitted bids to enhance themselves as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.

ELBOW became the first band to play inside St Paul's Cathedral yesterday. The crypt played host to tunes such as ‘One Day Like This’. In the seventeenth century ecclesiastical masterpiece where Charles and Diana married in 1981 the band also played ‘Grounds For Divorce’. Frontman Guy Garvey said: "Whatever you believe, you can't help but feel something where people really believe."

Fact of the Day:This week in 1877 Dr James Kay died. When a boat capsized on the River Irwell, it is said he used blood transfusions from a dog to save people.
