City news in 250 words: Friday 26 November

FC UNITED STADIUM GETS GO AHEAD: The Manchester United breakaway club has had plans for a new 5,000 capacity stadium in Newton Heath passed by Manchester City Council. The club has already raised nearly £700,000 from a community shares scheme it launched six weeks ago. It needs £3.5m to build the stadium.

TRAFFORD CENTRE TO EXPAND: Capital Shopping Centres have big plans for the Trafford Centre once the £1.6bn deal to sell the mall goes through. The new owners plan to add extra floors in some areas and create more shops. House of Fraser, Primark, Argos and Robert Dyas are reportedly in the pipeline.

ROONEY APOLOGISES TO FANS: The striker has apologised to Manchester United fans over his recent contract saga and insisted he was never going to join rivals Manchester City. He said: “If I had gone it wouldn’t have been in England. I have made my point clear since I signed my contract that I am committed to this club for the long term."

SEXUAL ASSAULT IN WITHINGTON: A 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted on Wilmslow Road, near to the junction of Derby Road, at about 1.25am on 25 November. The attacker is described as white, in his mid-20s to early 30s, about 6ft 3in tall and of a skinny build with strong muscular shoulders with dark brown curly hair and big thick eyebrows. He was wearing blue jeans, a dark blue sweater and spoke with a northern accent, possibly from Bradford. Anyone with information is asked to call West Didsbury CID on 0161 856 6090.

Out of the window weather forecast: It is so cold that all the arctic animals are moving to Greater Manchester this weekend.
