STRUGGLE FOR FOSTER CARERS: The number of children in care has exceeded the number of foster carers available in the North West. Between 2007 and 2009 councils were forced to spend an extra £24m on private fostering agencies to cope with the ever-increasing demand and if this pattern continues, it could cost a further £14m.

MILITARY AIRCRAFT LAND IN ALBERT SQUARE: Look for life-size models of military aircraft in Manchester city centre this weekend. The exhibition is part of the RAF's annual show. A Spitfire, a Chinook helicopter and a Typhoon jet fighter are in Albert Square, from Thursday until Saturday. The RAF hopes the show will raise its profile as it does not have a station in the local area.

AMBULANCE ATTACK: An ambulance had to be taken out of service en route to an emergency after a man attacked it with stones. The emergency vehicle was travelling along Stockport Road in Levenshulme when a man repeatedly threw stones before running off. Ged Blezard, head of service in Greater Manchester, said: "I am at loss to understand the reason behind mindless actions such as this, against a service which exists purely to help people."

FOOTBALL FANS are being urged by Greater Manchester Police to behave like 'World Cup heroes' in the region during the tournament. Responsible drinking will minimise violent incidents according to Chief Constable Peter Fahy. GMP's campaign, entitled 'A Time for Heroes' will take over the region, with World Cup wall planners being handed out to fans.
