City news in 250 words: Friday 20 August

SALFORD REDS STADIUM APPROVED: A £22M stadium that will be the new home of Salford Reds has been given the green light by the local council. The stadium will be built in three phases and could eventually hold 15,000 people. The development, which will be in Barton, is a joint venture between Peel Group and Salford City Council. The council has already given land worth £6.7m to Peel and will also lend the firm £22m to fund the build.

A DAIRY HAS BEEN RAIDED in Ardwick. Police are hunting robbers who drove off in an employee's car after robbing Freshways Ltd on Rondin Road yesterday morning. Two masked men armed with a sledge hammer and a gun went into the dairy while a third man waited in a car outside. They made off with cash and a dairy worker’s car.

NO NHS HOMEOPATHY: Doctors in Greater Manchester have been advised not to prescribe, refer or recommend homeopathy to patients by The Greater Manchester Medicines Management Group. The NHS medicine decision-making body said that ‘no clear evidence’ had been found that homeopathy was beneficial. In response, the Society of Homeopaths said the advice was based on ‘inaccurate’ data.

SMOKE ON A PLANE: A pilot had to make an emergency landing at Manchester Airport after people reported smelling smoke onboard. Flybe flight BE868 from Manchester to Southampton returned to the airport shortly after take-off yesterday afternoon. Passengers were evacuated and no-one on board was injured. Passengers were booked on to the next available flight.

Out of the window weather forecast: Looks like it could brighten up this afternoon but let’s face it, it’s about as guaranteed as a 2010 university place.
