City news in 250 words: Friday 18 June

THEA EURYPHAESSA, our cocktail writer, has written a book, on her marathon runner experiences and covering mythology, psychology and much else: it’s a sharp, witty, erudite, look at character development. Thea will be reading from ‘Running with Myself’ on Saturday afternoon from 2pm at the Friend’s Meeting House on Mount Street. Afterwards we’ll ask her to review some cocktails for us. Maybe.

CUTS WON’T AFFECT METROLINK: Planned extensions to the east and south of Manchester have survived government cuts. New routes to East Didsbury and Ashton-under-Lyne will receive £85m funding as planned, according to the Department of Transport. Eight trams and two new park-and-ride sites will be provided.

NOT ENOUGH LOOS IN THE CITY? Not for long. City centre shops and department stores are preparing to open their toilets to the public. House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Debenhams, Manchester Arndale, The Triangle and Manchester Craft Centre, are among those that have agreed to display stickers in the widow inviting people to use their toilets.

WORLD CUP FAN PARK TROUBLEMAKERS risk being banned from all football grounds. Police are threatening those who disrupt the screening of tonight’s England game at the Castlefield Venue with Football Banning Orders – which will bar them from both the Castlefield venue and all live stadium games. The warning comes after violence at the big-screen fan zone during England’s opening game against the US on Saturday.Council leisure spokesman Mike Amesbury said: “Our priority is to keep everyone safe at the site and we’re taking a no-nonsense approach.

Out of the window weather forecast: As dull as dishwater. We may have jinxed it yesterday. Sorry.
