Boy charged over New Year’s Day murder: A 16 year-old boy has been charged over the murder of a Salford care worker on New Year’s Day. Adam Steele was taken into hospital after being stabbed, but died of his injuries soon afterwards. The boy, who cannot be named due to his age, is due to appear in court. Three other men were also arrested and bailed.
Labour romps home in Oldham: Labour won the Oldham East and Saddleworth by-election with a majority of 3,558 votes. Debbie Abrahams, claimed victory to replace former minister Phil Woolas. Liberal Democrat Elwyn Watkins, who lost by just 103 votes at the general election in May, came second with 11,160 votes. The margin represented an 11.6 per cent swing to Labour.
The return of the mosaics at Afflecks Palace: The famous mosaics once seen outside Afflecks Palace are making a comeback. Artist Mark Kennedy will once again create new works piece by piece, including an image of the labrador from nearby bar Black Dog Ballroom. Kennedy hopes the images will bring a sense of nostalgia to the Northern Quarter and celebrate Manchester greatest icons from the past and present.
Ryan Giggs mulls over one-year deal at United: Welsh wonder Ryan Giggs will begin negotiation talks over a 12-month extension to his contract at Manchester United. The winger will be out of contract at the end of the season, and looks set to agree a rolling deal reviewed on a season by season basis.
