City news in 250 words: Friday 13 August

FLOOD CLEAN-UP: Parts of Greater Manchester are being cleaned-up today following yesterday’s flash floods. Motorists were stranded in Cheadle as well as parts of Stockport and Bury after up to 15mm of rain fell in the space of an hour. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service dealt with more than 60 call outs in two hours.

BUS DRIVER VERSUS BREASTFEEDER: A bus driver, who was accused of ordering a passenger off a bus for trying to breastfeed her baby, has been cleared by Stagecoach. After reviewing on-board CCTV, travel bosses have rejected Lauren McKenna’s account and say their driver didn’t speak to her during the journey. She now plans to take legal action.

LOST BALL SCAM: Police in Oldham are warning elderly residents of a scam where thieves pretend to have kicked a ball into a garden and then burgle their home. While the victim helps to search for the fictitious ball, another thief enters the house. Det Con Sykes, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "It really is a cowardly act to target elderly people and either involves a young child in the scam or to pretend to be looking for a ball that 'children' have supposedly lost.”

MANCHESTER AIRPORT TO TAKE 100,000: Manchester Airport is in talks with airlines to ease passengers’ travel chaos caused by BAA staff strikes at six airports. Possible strikes at Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh over the August Bank Holiday weekend may result in 100,000 passengers transferring through to Manchester Airport.

Out of the window weather forecast: It’s Friday 13th. The weather shouldn’t matter as you shouldn’t have left the house today.
