THE FIRST EASTER EGG TO MENTION JESUS on the packaging is to be launched by The Church of England, thanks to an idea put forward by the communications officer for the diocese of Manchester, David Marshall. The egg, which has been developed by Manchester-based The Meaningful Chocolate Company, will be made from Fairtrade chocolate and donations from its profits will go to charity. The Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, said: “We hope that all our supermarkets will stock the first and only Easter egg in the UK that explains the significance of Easter."

CORONATION STREET ART: Manchester based company Iron Gut Publishing, has signed a deal with ITV to produce a limited edition range of art featuring Coronation Street. The work will feature some of the most memorable characters and scenes from the show’s 50 year history. The range can be seen at www.toonsart.com

FLATS FAIL SAFETY CHECKS: Students who recently moved into the Grafton, a 145-bedroom development on Grafton Street, have been forced to move into temporary accommodation after MCR Property Group was accused of failing to meet fire rules. Fire brigade inspectors said the building had not had the necessary safety checks.

WHEN ED MET ALEX: New Labour leader Ed Miliband paid a visit to Manchester United yesterday to meet club manager and lifelong supporter of the party, Sir Alex Ferguson. Sir Alex is reported to have told Mr Miliband "The great mantle falls on your shoulders" before telling reporters "I think he'll do well."
