NOBLES Amusements will be evicted from the building it occupies in Piccadilly to make way for a new Waitrose and a Travelodge hotel. A High Court judge rejected a legal claim from Nobles, who wanted to remain in the building until 2022. The owners of the freehold, Jolan Piccadilly, can now evict the gaming club and redevelop the building. Restaurant chains Nando’s and ASK have also agreed conditional leases on the building. The court case was notable as both sides were members of the same family.

GREATER MANCHESTER Passenger Transport Executive has been renamed Transport For Greater Manchester, with responsibilities over the region’s roads. Tandy joined the council in 1998 from the Cornerhouse theatre, originally as director of Manchester city galleries, in charge of the £35m refurbishment of Manchester Art Gallery. The council has to lose 2,000 jobs as part of the budget cuts imposed by government.
