Monday 30 June: tram chaos, lines down, Bishop collars wife

Published on June 30th 2008.

MAJOR DISRUPTION continues in the city centre following an incident on Metrolink. A tram carrying passengers from the Radiohead concert at Old Trafford on Sunday night came off the rails and damaged overhead cables at the vital Princess Street/Mosley Street junction. No services are operating to or from Eccles, and Altrincham-bound passengers can only go as far as the city centre. Mosley Street is closed to traffic as is part of Princess Street. There were no injuries.

CITY CENTRE businesses have also been hit over the weekend with a BT failure which is still ongoing. A cable damaged on Friday hasn’t been fixed and disruption continues to affect scores of businesses and apartments in the Lever Street and Spear Street area of the Northern Quarter. BT ‘hope’ it will be sorted by tomorrow, Tuesday.

A WOMAN was repeatedly raped in Whalley Range on Sunday night. The attack, which occurred on Egerton Road North, was described by police as a "terrifying ordeal". The police say the attack is an isolated incident but people need to be wary. The offender is white, between 30 to 40 years old, stocky with shaved or short light coloured hair. He has a local Manchester accent.

THE BISHOP OF MANCHESTER is keeping it in the family. Bishop McCulloch has ordained his own wife, Celia, in a clear gesture to the rest of the Church of England, days before he will speak on the still divisive issue of female bishops. The service was held in Manchester Cathedral.
