Wednesday 10 September: The Rev becomes The Rep, Elbow win Mercury and radiation mystery at uni

Published on September 10th 2008.

FORMER PRESENTERS FROM THE REVOLUTION radio station, are set to launch a new independent station for Manchester by the name of Radio Republic. The new station is to be led by Phil Beckett, Martin Coogan, Cottee and musicians turned DJs Mani and Mike Joyce. Mick Ferry, Scott Carey, Kati, Alex Carter, Broady, Graeme Hawley, Jeff Hordley, Mark and Leon, and Tom and Gnash have also offered their support.

THE MERCURY PRIZE for best British album of the past year went to Manchester band Elbow. The fivesome beat the likes of Radiohead, Adele and Burial, to the £20,000 prize. On receiving the prestigious award, singer, Guy Garvey said: “I know I'm supposed to be cool and say something coy, but it's literally the best thing that's ever happened to us.”

RADIATION experiments at The University of Manchester a century ago are thought to have caused the deaths of two lecturers. The Rutherford Building was used to carry radiation experiments in 1908, however no decontamination measures were recorded there until 1999. A report claims that the deaths of Dr Hugh Wagner and Dr John Clark from cancer may have been linked to radiation in the building.

ROYAL MAIL complaints in Greater Manchester have increased by 60 per cent in the last year. Complaints are at an all time high because of rising costs, delivery cuts and a general decline in standards. Royal Mail have received over 100,500 complaints in the past 12 months and compensation payouts have dropped by 10 per cent.

Only discovered the rev by chance, bored with the same old playlist on xfm one morning - there's only so much kaiser chiefs, scouting for girls and automatic I can take. Then just a few months later it went all MOR. So the rev is dead, long live the rep! Also well done to Elbow after 20 years graft, can't wait to see them at the apollo
