Tuesday 30 December: The Living Room next slump victim? Plus theatre and food come together and Droylsden devastated

Published on December 30th 2008.

THE LIVING ROOM group is in trouble. The bar chain began on Deansgate in Manchester and then, with its clever formula of upmarket laid-back food and drink, spread across the UK. Its shares have been suspended after managers failed to agree new banking facilities with its lenders. The parent company, the Ultimate Leisure Group, recently parted company with chairman, Mark Jones, who had bought the Living Room bars from North West based Living Ventures, owners of Grill on the Alley, in 2007.

THE LOWRY arts complex at the Quays is to see its restaurant used as a theatre despite having two purpose built theatres on-site. Interactive Theatre of Australia is bringing a show called ‘Faulty Towers…the dining experience’: a ‘two-hour interactive performance revolving around a three-course meal’ to the Lowry on 13 January. The audience will be the diners and tickets3, which include the meal, are £37 and £42.

A 39-YEAR OLD MAN was shot in the Glodwick area of Oldham, Greater Manchester on Monday. His injuries are not life-threatening. Police are calling for witnesses and information about the incident. .

IT'S BEEN THE FOOTBALL EPIC to end all epics. Non-league Droylsden survived fog, dodgy goals and broken floodlights to beat League Two side Chesterfield in the FA Cup at the fourth attempt. Now they’ve been thrown out of the competition after they fielded a player serving a one-match ban. It probably didn’t help that the player in question, Sean Newton, scored both goals in Drolysden’s final and now fruitless triumph.

I seem to remember Bury being thrown out for exactly the same offence...no appeal will switch this one around and to add insult to injury,Chesterfield now play Ipswich the last side to be faced when this happened to a team, are Ipswich a Bad omen?

Looks like Living Ventures knew what they were doing by offloading The Living Room and Prohibition from their portfolio last year. The Grill on the Alley, as always, seems busy and probably very profitable.
