Wednesday 8 April: Onto the next generation of gangsters, data mining and bus tours in Manchester

Published on April 8th 2009.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE (GMP) has hailed the fight against gun crime a success after the capture of 11 Gooch Gang members. GMP statistics reveal no gun-related murder and a 92% drop in gang-related shootings since Operation Cougar was launched in February 2008. Chief Constable Peter Fahy said: “Our next step is to identify the next generation of gang members and stop them from falling into this sort of lifestyle.”

A SYMPOSIUM ON 'DATA MINING' organised by Salford University will discuss the negative impacts of online public data to analyse our patterns and behaviours. Data gathered by sites like Google and Facebook could be used for advertising and screening job candidates. Eduarda Mendes Rodrigues from a Microsoft research group will be at the event on 22 April at the Lowry, Salford Quays.

AN EXHIBITION BUS will tour 13 locations in Manchester throughout April to let passengers see a vision of their area's future development. The council is developing a new framework for the city over the next 15 years by consulting the public on these tours regarding housing, economic growth and the environment. To book a place call the planning team on 0161 234 4579.

NINE MEMBERS from Britain's Paralympic cycling team, who brought home 17 gold and three silver medals from Beijing, will compete at the 2009 BT Paralympic World Cup at Manchester's Velodrome. Darren Kenny, Simon Richardson, Rik Waddon and Manchester-based cyclists Sarah Storey and Jody Cundy hope to continue their success from 20-25 May.
