Tuesday 26 February: Canal Street stabbing, the Queen comes to town and the Blues fall from grace

Published on February 26th 2008.

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was murdered on Canal Street last night. The victim was approached by two men, one of whom stabbed him in the neck. He suffered a serious wound in the incident and was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later. Police have arrested a 66-year-old and a 49-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

THE QUEEN will be in Manchester this week to formally open the new Manchester Civil Justice Centre. Her Majesty will be arriving at Victoria Station by the Royal Train on Thursday morning, accompanied by Prince Phillip. The Queen will open the £113m building before meeting members of the armed services at Urbis and then attending a Halle Orchestra rehearsal at the Bridgewater Hall.

COMPENSATION arrangements are set to be announced by the government today as an alternative to the axed super-casino plans. The casino was expected to bring in some £265m of investment to East Manchester and up to 2,700 direct and indirect jobs. Communities Secretary Hazel Blears has suggested the new deal could be more valuable to the area than the casino would have been.

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON has spoken of his disappointment as Manchester City lost 0-2 to Everton last night. He said: “We did not play that badly and had a lot of possession without getting any penetration. But we conceded two easy goals, both at set pieces. We tried hard in the second half but with our attacks they were able to break and still create chances.”
