Monday 24 August: Weekend crime crackdown, Oasis no-show at V and Tories blame Labour for poverty

Published on August 24th 2009.

A COUNCIL WORKER who was also a benefits cheat was caught out after boasting to colleagues the council paid his wages and rent. Caretaker Andrew Wood and his partner, Michelle Brown, claimed over £50,000 in income support, council tax and housing benefit on the home they shared in Sale. The pair both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud at Manchester Crown Court, and were given six-month prison sentences suspended for two years.

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE were arrested over the weekend in a crackdown on alcohol-fuelled crime. Greater Manchester Police arrested 672 suspects as part of Operation Admiral - a huge 24-hour swoop that involved more than 3,000 police officers and support staff. Courts throughout the city and surrounding areas dealt with 46 people on Saturday with hundreds more being released on police bail.

FANS WERE DISAPPOINTED at Oasis’s no-show at the V festival on Sunday. Doctors advised Liam Gallagher not to perform at the Essex festival after he contracted laryngitis. Thousands of fans booed when Snow Patrol, who stepped up to fill their slot, paid tribute to “the mighty Oasis”.

TORIES HAVE CLAIMED THE POOR are being let down by the Labour government. Figures released by the Conservatives show the 20 most deprived council wards in England, including Harpurhey, are in the top 10% for crime. The party analysed the 32,000 wards in England and found Harpurhey to be the second most deprived, with the seventh highest crime and disorder rates and the second highest level of child poverty.

Get yourself a new woman, halve those bills! Seriously though you're setting a great example to your kids by working, these things tend to work themselves out. Also as it seems you have joint custody, perhaps you need to speak to a solicitor about the amount you pay in child support.

I’m on 25k a year.(1572.00 after tax and Nat ins £513)I have two kids that live with their mum (no I didn’t cheat, she did)I love them but they cost me £300 in child support each month plus travel and entertainment for them around£180 per month. My rent is £550 for a 1 bed flat. Council tax (£103 per month). I live near town so I walk to work. My utility bills, gas, electric and water are £150 per month. My food bills for me and the kids who stay with me 3 days per week are £180 per month. I need urgent dental treatment, I can’t get an NHS dentist, I can’t get a doctors appt. I get no benefits from the state I earn too much... my expendable income is around £109 per month for clothes and shoes, but I dare not spend it in case something else comes up so it is saved for Xmas and birthdays. I earn above the average national wage, so what’s the point? Shouldn’t I just join the dole queue? Is it any wonder people won’t go back to work?
