AMIR KHAN has become a world champion gaining the WBA light-welterweight title after easily beating Ukrainian boxer Andreas Kotelnik at the MEN Arena on Saturday. The 22-year-old surprised his opponent and everybody else by his speed around the ring and on the attack. Khan has further surprised people by proposing a fight with Ricky Hatton, the Hattersley based hero, claiming this would be a massively popular bout.
MANCHESTER AIRPORT has begun a noise consultation with nearby residents. The residents are being asked for their views on a new plan to manage noise at the airport, with the aim of contributing to a new noise policy before it is finalised. The proposal includes reducing the daytime threshold above which noise fines are issued as well as increasing the penalty for breaching the noise limit; people have until 21 October to submit their ideas to the consultation.A JUDGE at Manchester Crown Court has jailed a Stockport man for a year after he tried to blackmail a Premier League footballer. Paul Smith, 30, from Heaton Norris pleaded guilty to of using menaces against the player in January, in an attempt to obtain £20,000 from him.
MANCHESTER CITY’s spending spree continues with the addition of Emmanuel Adebayor, the 25-year-old Togo striker. Adebayor, previously at Arsenal, joins Carlos Tevez, Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz in Mark Hughes’ huge summer spending explosion at the City of Manchester Stadium. The City manager has still not given up his prolonged pursuit of Chelsea captain John Terry.
