BULLFIGHTER FRANK EVANS had his autobiography signing-session cancelled by Waterstones following threats by animal rights’ protesters. The bookshop cancelled the sessions in Liverpool and Manchester following letters accusing it as glamorising the “cruel, violent spectacle" of bullfighting.
They also said staff at the stores had received threats because of the matador’s appearance.
A NURSE WHO WAS STRUCK OFF the register for secretly filming care for the elderly has been nominated for a national award.
Margaret Haywood, 58, from Liverpool, has been shortlisted for the Nursing Standard's Patient's Choice Award. She filmed at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, for the BBC's Panorama in 2005, her film showing examples of neglect. Miss Haywood is currently appealing against being struck off.
A BIRD BREEDER HAS BEEN JAILED for eight weeks after being found in possession of a rare goshawk. John Simcox, 63, from Ellesmere Port, pleaded guilty to possessing the bird and making a false statement to wildlife investigators yesterday at Chester Magistrates Court.
CROSBY’S new £10m Lakeside Adventure Centre has been put up by Sefton Council as a possible venue for the 2012 London Olympics, against Weymouth which is the current favourite to stage watersport events.
The building – formerly Sefton Water Sports Centre at the Marina –will open to community groups next month, before being opened to the wider public early next year.
Sefton Council wants it to become a centre of excellence for watersports across the North West and also plans to register it for the 2012 Paralympics.
