Tuesday 29 April: Metrolink attack, Shinawatra cashes in and a tomatoe a day keeps the wrinkles away

Published on April 29th 2008.

A MUM-OF-TWO has told how she was beaten unconscious by a gang of youths on the Metrolink tram travelling from Timperley. Julie Pickford, 47, suffered a fractured eye socket and bruises. The gang stole £50 from her handbag and booted her on to a platform. They kicked and stamped on her as she lay on the floor. A 15-year-old girl has since been arrested and released on bail.

A SHOP ASSITANT in Levenshulme has been threatened by racist arsonists up to three times a day according to reports. The Welcome Store on Broom Lane has been targeted by three men who refused to pay for items before threatening and racially abusing the Pakistani worker. The incidents were captured on CCTV and police are now appealing for witnesses.

RESEARCHERS at the University of Manchester believe tomatoes are the solution to protecting skin against UV rays. The study claims that antioxidant lycopene, which is found in the fruit, can ward off skin damage. Following research, Professor Lesley Rhodes, a dermatologist at the University of Manchester told the BBC: “The tomato diet boosted the level of procollagen in the skin significantly. These increasing levels suggest potential reversal of the skin ageing process.”

THAKSIN SHINAWATRA is officially one of the richest people in the North West. The Manchester City owner featured in The Sunday Times Rich List which estimates his wealth at £640m. The Duke of Westminster holds the top spot of the regional ranking, with a fortune of £7bn.

Shocking story, and I'm convinced these events are occuring with far more regularity these days (despite assurances crime is lower than ever etc). This could be anyones mother making her way back from work/shopping and I feel for her and her family. I won't accept the parents of these nasty kids are entirely innocent so I'd haul them up as well. What hope do have for our [fairly woeful] public transport (and topically) getting people out of the relative security of their own cars? But as the other posters have pointed out, we all need to somehow intervene (and quite possibly pay the consequences).

Looking forward to it Jonathan!

I'm disgusted with that story about the woman on the tram. I realise people are afraid to confront youths these days but for the driver and whoever was on the tram or the platform to let that happen is just sick. And such wanton violence, why weren't they content to just take her money? I fear for humanity if that is the next generation.

Good to see Thaksin 'frank' Shinawatra is worth £640 million, the man known lovingly at home and by United fans as 'Doctor Death' has done well to squirel that much cash from his dodgy dealings in Thailand. He will need some of that to pay his new manager after it was revealed yesterday he will be axeing poor old Sven.Strange how on the day my team United reached their 3rd European Cup final - the man who has masterminded 'Ciddy' beating us home and away this season is shown the door - pure City, this could only happen down at the empty blue seats heaven that is the 'theatre of comedy in Eastlands'--- All aboard the chaos bus - another 3 decades of failure, uncertainty and broken dreams awaits. Massive.

How the hell can the kind of sick attacks that seem to revolve around drunken or just vicious and mindless scum like this continue all over the country?Because people do ignore what they see happening around them. I have been on buses , trams, trains and had several 'run ins' with exactly the same kind of scum that perpertrate these kinds of violent acts.Myself and my girlfriend have been spat at, threatened and verbally abused - usually by males but also sometimes girls are involved. Luckily I have so far avoided physical injury and have 'fronted' these situations when they have occurred, but I suppose it will only be a matter of time that I come off worse when I intervene when I witness bad beahviour. The one sad and usual occurence I experienced when I have had run ins with these types of scumbags, is the lack of assistance I have ever received from fellow traveller's or bus drivers or train or tram staff. We all need to intervene when these kind of animals attack, abuse or threaten fellow passengers, or they will continue to get away with as in this case almost murder.

Kev, we have a story going up tomorrow. This is an interview with Peter Cushing, the Metrolink boss at GMPTE, and is follow up to our feature a month ago. We ask specifically about security on the trams. I think you'll find the answers interesting.

The story about the woman being attacked is disgusting.Whoever did it should be hunted down and put down - they are just scum and the majority of hard working decent people in this country are sick of them and the system's soft and lenient way of handling them. Most of us dont care about their poor upbringing or drug habbits, just get the vermin off our streets.Unfortunatley although the police try hard they are held back by the patheticly weak and out of touch judges and politicians who run Britain.mind you what do we expect when the goverment gives licences to computer games whos sole intention is to steal cars and beat people up.Its not rocket science is it.
