CHRISTIE'S CANCER HOSPITAL in Withington will be paid back the £6.5m it lostwhen an Icelandic bank went bust. The money, which will be paid back throughthe NHS, was raised by volunteers, charity workers and the hospital'spatients. Over 100,000 people signed the petition demanding the money back,with Christie's vowing “not to rest until the money is returned”, the cash paid back coming from the NHS North West’s ‘strategic reserve’ fund.

A MAN WHO made his millions selling fake Viagra-type drugs has been jailed fortwo years. Cashing in on the online trade of prescription drugs, Martin SimonHickman, 49, from Ashton under Lyne, made £3.4m from the £6mturnover of his business, operating in Ashton. Described as “only a custodial sentence being appropriate”, Hickman pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering, possession, sale and supply of counterfeit and unlicensed medicines.

METROLINK PASSENGERS faced long delays yesterday after a tram derailed near Manchester Central. No-one is thought to have been injured, although an investigation has been launched into the causes of the derailment of the Manchester-bound tram and a replacement bus service set up for disrupted passengers.

A MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY STUDENT is suffering from a flesh eating disease, following a trip to Peru. Physics student Girish Gupta has been diagnosed with Leishmaniasis after being bitten by the sand-fly whilst filming for the BBC’s ‘Extreme Dreams’ programme. Awaiting treatment with side-effects similar to that of chemotherapy, Girish says he doesn’t want the disease to “put anybody off” from travelling.
