Friday 4 April: Alcohol-free off-licence, councils fall for claims and Morrissey accepts apology

Published on April 4th 2008.

A GREATER MANCHESTER off-licence has become the first to be banned from selling alcohol after being caught serving booze to children. Worsley Food and Wine, Eccles has had its licence revoked following an undercover operation to catch sales to underage drinkers. The shop was caught in April 2007 and then again in October, when they sold alchopops to a pair of 15-year-old mystery shoppers from Trading Standards.

COMPENSATION for slips, trips and falls in Greater Manchester costs councils millions of pounds, according to reports. Graham Stringer, MP for Manchester Blackley has spoken out about what he describes as 'a growing compensation culture'. He has also slated the way claims companies tout for business. Manchester City Council has footed a £12.3m compensation bill in the last 8 years.

MANCHESTER SINGER, Morrissey has received a full public apology from Word Magazine after they suggested he was both racist and hypocritical in their publication. The former Smiths frontman took Word to court following the article about his political views in the March edition. The singer is also in the process of taking action against the NME.

MANCHESTER UNITED will continue their charge for the title in the match against Middlesbrough on Sunday. United are so far, unbeaten in five matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding none. Manchester City will play Chelsea on Saturday and are hoping to improve their recent record of just one win in 6 games since the 2-1 victory over their city rivals at Old Trafford.
