Thursday 25 June: Girl thugs, contraceptive pill death, and Facebook updates from Lancaster Prison

Published on June 25th 2009.

THREE GIRLS HAVE been arrested after a teenager was savagely attacked in what police call a 'racially motivated' incident. Thugs punched the 17-year-old girl so hard she suffered a fractured eye socket. A part of one of the girl's bangles was left lodged in her cheek. The Asian teenager was in Springfield Park in Rochdale, with her three young sisters when the 'savage and senseless' attack happened.

A STOCKPORT PRISONER has flouted prison security by regularly updating his Facebook page. Kane Barrett was sentenced to a minimum of five-and-a-half-years for being involved in a string of vicious robberies in south Manchester, including spraying one victim in the face with acid. It is believed Barrett was able to update his Facebook page by smuggling a mobile phone into Lancaster Prison. An investigation has been launched.

A YOUNG WOMAN died from a blood clot just three months after taking the contraceptive pill. Helen Schofield, 33, was prescribed Dianette by her GP who failed to tell her of the increased chance of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), an inquest heard. The charity shop volunteer from Prestwich later collapsed when walking with her mother and died in hospital in February. The contraceptive pill made a 'significant' contribution to Miss Schofield’s death.

POLICE HAVE BEGUN an investigation after a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car. The yet-to-be-identified woman suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, after the collision at Waterloo Road, Cheetham Hill. The incident happened at 5pm yesterday.
