Thursday 2 April: Bouncer strike, tattooed police and The Street to be axed

Published on April 3rd 2009.

NIGHTCLUB BOUNCERS in Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and Chester, are planning to protest over the killing of Mohamed Kaleem Rafeek. Rafeek, 21, was stabbed in Rusholme last weekend. Police believe the stabbing was a vendetta attack after Rafeek earlier refused someone entry to the Mansion nightclub, where he worked. The striking doormen are expected to meet outside the Printworks in Manchester city centre, from 9.30pm on Saturday 4 April. Some Manchester bars and clubs may have to close for the night because of the lack of security.

TATTOO RULES are to be relaxed within Greater Manchester Police force, following a review of the police policy. Guidelines on the tattoos, particularly of new recruits, which were previously deemed inappropriate, have been relaxed provided the body art is not exposed whilst on duty.

SALFORD DRAMA, THE STREET could be axed as part of ITV's budget reduction. Writer Jimmy McGovern has said that the ITV Granada team behind the BBC1 series are facing redundancy. The third six-part series of the double Bafta award winning drama was due to be screened this autumn and was due to feature stars such as Bob Hoskins, Jane Horrocks and Anna Friel.

FOREIGN DRIVERS speed more than UK residents in Manchester according to roadside camera footage from Greater Manchester Police. Foreign cars were captured speeding more than 1,500 times last year but avoided justice because officers can't access databases of non-British cars. The Department for Transport aims to give the DVLA powers to share information with its foreign counterparts.
