Thursday 6 August: Tragic taxi driver, new Metrolink stops and a muddy rescue

Published on August 6th 2009.

A TAXI DRIVER who was stabbed eight months ago following an attempted robbery has died in hospital. Anthony Leigh, aged 61, collected two men outside the Bay Horse pub on 5 January after his firm received a call requesting a taxi. Mr Leigh was then stabbed as he stopped his car on Barrington Street, Clayton. The taxi driver died on Sunday. An 18-year-old from Newton Heath has pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and a 19-year-old from Wythenshawe pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted robbery.

FUNDING FOR TWO NEW METROLINK
stops has been approved. The Bury to Manchester route will have stops at Queens Road and Abraham Moss with government funding better transport links to new homes. Councillor Keith Whitmore, chairman of the transport authority, said: “These new stops will open up transport opportunities to thousands more households in the area”.

A BURY FAMILY was rescued from mud after an attempt to rescue their dog went disastrously wrong. The Mitchell family got into trouble at Elton Reservoir after pooch Bonny bounded into the mud and got stuck. Mum, dad, six-year-old son and dog spent 30 minutes waist-deep before the emergency services came to their rescue.

A MOTORIST has been fined for moving a yard through a red light to allow a police van on an emergency call past. Phillip Lilley was fined £60 and given three penalty points for his ‘crime’ and told by Central Ticket Office that he should not have moved.
