<B>Tuesday 10 November:</b> Mum's a fire starter, job cuts at United Utilities and Marc Pierre White at Manchester United cook-off

A MUM SET FIRE TO HER HOUSE TO GET A NEW ONE closer to her mother, Manchester Crown Court has heard. Kelly Marie O'Connor, 22, told police teenagers had set fire to her Benchill home, but police became suspicious when a neighbour's CCTV camera showed her leaving the house with her two young children while flames flickered. O'Connor was spared jail after she admitted arson and perverting the course of justice.

HUNDREDS OF JOBS ARE EXPECTED TO GO at North-West water giant United Utilities. The company said it was consulting with union leaders on ways in which “we can maintain the strength of our business”, but workers have said they have been told up to 300 jobs were at risk and compulsory losses could not be ruled out.

A HIT-AND-RUN DEATH caused rush hour delays yesterday morning. Police investigating an apparent hit-and-run in the early hours of the morning closed The Crescent, in Salford, to traffic heading into Manchester, with traffic tailbacks as far way as Bolton. Police discovered the male victim lying near the junction with Albion Way at 2.10am. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are appealing for witnesses.

HELL’S KITCHEN CHEF, MARCO PIERRE WHITE will be in charge of Manchester United players as they test their culinary skills at a dinner for charity. Edwin Van Der Sar, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra will be under the watchful eye of Marco Pierre White before having their grub judged by diners on the night later this month, with tickets starting at £175 each.
