Monday 15 September: Labour beanfeast, Birnham and Victoria, City slip up as black puddings soar

Published on September 15th 2008.

APPARENTLY £18m of investment is winging it's way to Manchester courtesy of the Labour Party Conference which starts this Saturday. No this isn't a windfall tax but part of the money the event might pump into the local economy. Out of the national economy will go, amongst other things, the costs of providing 1,100 police officers to secure the event.

BIGWIGS galore are in town this week. As a scout for the deluge of politicians comes Andy Birnham, Secretary of State for Culture and Media and Sport. He's here to mark stage one of the restoration of Victoria Baths in Longsight. With him will be Carole Souter, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund. The whole event will be mc-eed by Confidential editor Jonathan Schofield.

MANCHESTER City's moment in the sun came to a juddering halt on Saturday when after taking an early lead against Chelsea they crumbled 1-3. The mood of celebration was so dramatic it even resulted in a round of applause and cheers for outgoing owner and ex-Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra, now on the run from the Thai government, when he took his seat.

THE REAL sporting action took place in the north Greater Manchester, ex-Lancashire, town of Ramsbottom. More than 1000 people turned up to watch the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships. This is where people lob black puddings 20ft up to a platform to attempt to dislodge Yorkshire Puddings perched there. The winner was Adam Rhys Arthern - a typical Lancashire name.
