<b>Friday 30 October:</b> Council worker guilty of benefit fraud, hair-dye burns and Manchester's hard-to-love buildings

A BENEFIT OFFICER HAS BEEN JAILED for 14 months after falsely claiming more than £75,000 over five years. Laqad Yacoob, 40, of Stretford, who worked for Manchester City Council, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of falsely obtaining benefits. Manchester Minshull Crown Court heard how colleagues viewed him as an expert. The benefits cheat, who claimed him, his wife and children had various illnesses, was found out after suspicious colleagues raised the alarm.

A HAIR-DYE REACTION LED TO a woman being rushed to hospital suffering from agonising burns. Zoe Vernon, 22, from Didsbury, was taken by ambulance and put on a drip in the special burns unit after suffering a severe reaction to the Boots product. Zoe spent three days in hospital and still has blurred vision in one eye. Boots, which produces the Boots Colour brand, is now investigating.

A WALK WITH A DIFFERENCE IS BEING held this Sunday as part of the Manchester Science Festival. During the tour actors, playing the parts of Ernest Rutherford and Alan Turing, will give short performances to demonstrate what these pioneers would think about the city’s modern-day advances. MANCHESTER’S HARD-TO-LOVE BUILDINGS are being celebrated by a newly created society for fans of the city's overlooked architecture. Manchester Modernist Society have created more than 10,000 postcards showing buildings such as the CIS tower and the distinctive Toastrack college building, which have been given to visitors
