Tuesday 24 March: Columbine copycats, Mayfield Station resurrection and Debenhams' sign off

Published on March 24th 2009.

A PAIR OF TEENAGERS have appeared in court accused of plotting to blow up a Greater Manchester school and shopping centre. The boys, aged 16 and 17, had allegedly planned to time the attack to coincide with the ten year anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre in the US on April 20. A friend discovered details of the plan and raised the alarm. The boys will appear at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester on March 30.

AN UNUSED RAILWAY STATION could be reopened to help ease overcrowding at Piccadilly station. Mayfield station last saw a passenger train in 1960. Some transport bosses now want the four platform station, which is on the opposite side of Fairfield Street to Piccadilly Station, to be reopened. Network Rail have said as they don't own Mayfield Station, there are no plans to bring it back at the moment.

AN 85-YEAR-OLD WOMAN has been saved from conmen after bank workers became suspicious of an unusually large withdrawal of cash from Natwest in Didsbury. She told staff that she had been dropped off at the bank to draw out money for work done in her garden. The men, who had been waiting outside the bank for her in a van, drove off before police arrived.

PART OF MARKET STREET was sealed off yesterday amid fears Debenhams' sign was going to fall off in the high winds. A workman was sent up the building suspended in a harness to secure the sign to the façade.
