Published on October 15th 2009.

CAR OWNERS IN MANCHESTER CITY CENTRE BEWARE as latest statistics reveal you are more likely to be the victim of car crime. The postcode M3 made the top five of insurance claims, with people in this area two-times more likely to put in a claim. Moneysupermarket’s head of motor insurance said he “wasn’t surprised to see Manchester in the top 20” in the analysis of 3.8m insurance quotation requests made to the comparison website.

BBC NORTH HAS BEEN HANDED THE KEYS to their new Mediacity home. In a ceremony marking the handover, BBC officials were given the keys to building C, the new headquarters of BBC North, from site owner Peel Media. BBC North chief Peter Salmon said: “It's the first of the big milestones.” Over 2,500 jobs from five departments are moving to Salford Quays in 2011 from their current London home.

janey says..“ I live in the M3 postcode.I moved here two years ago and have never lived in an area so riddled with crime especially car break-ins. The youths doing it are completely brazen about the whole thing twice ive seen it happen in broad daylight. One time I saw three youths on bikes eyeing up a van . it was obvious what they were up to so i got out my camera but once they saw me they started to throw stones and one ripped a drainpipe of the wall to throw at me . luckily it only flew a foot in front of him. the police arrived about 30 mins after ...bit late then methinks ...to patrol the area. Two youths were caught about a month ago but the break ins still continues. I still see on ocasion the familiar sight of hooded boys on bikes slowly cruising the parked cars around greengates....I should imagine they get a slap on the wrists when caught

Janey is right. The problems are the surface car parks surrounding the north and west sides of the city centre, such as Greengate. The car parks that are advertised as cheap Arena parking. They're very busy during the day but near empty at night, bar the odd car.

Good point Cas. M3 is a big area to lump togeher as one statistic. I too live in M3 and have not seen evidence of this problem although my parking space is underground so I may be a bit sheltered from it. The only car related problem I have seen in the area is the car clampers who actively patrol the car park of the building I live in looking to clamp any resident who has left one of their wheels sticking out of their own space ! Scumbags.

The M3 postcode is a funny one. I live in M3 4JN, which is Liverpool Rd, Castfield and have never seen any evidence of car crime and being from Lower Broughton I know what to look for! However the postcode seems to straddle a really big area. I'd bet it's as big as M1, M2, M4 and maybe even M5 combined.

I hate to point out the obvious, but don't park there then?! Would it not be comparitive in price to rent a secure parking space if it's long term? Or if not, park in a more secure car park on the occasions you visit.

M, like the scrap of land next to Strangeways?Yeah them sort of car parks are well dodgey. Only a fool would park on there at night.
