Monday 18 May: Chaytor the cheater, Bolt shoots down Deansgate, Pipe death and United on the razz

Published on May 18th 2009.

JUST HOW MANY Greater Manchester MPs have been guilty of creative accounting with their expenses? This is a question facing selection committees across the region, following David Chaytor’s outing as a topclass cheat . The Bury North Labour MP claimed £13,000 for a mortgage he had already paid off on his London flat. He will talk to members of his constituency party on Thursday: his case looks set to be examined by the Police

USAIN BOLT, triple Olympic champion and 100m world record holder, became the fastest man over 150m ever in a race along Deansgate. He took 14.35 seconds. It was a day of races in Manchester with the 10km Great Manchester Run won by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie in a time of 27 minutes and 39 seconds.

OXFORD ROAD WILL CLOSE from Monday 18 May as works to replace water pipes in Manchester continues. The first area to close will be between Hulme Street and Whitworth Street including Whitworth Street junction, access to Oxford Road Station will remain. Buses will still operate and the work will take over three and a half months in total.

CONFIDENTIAL got loads of phone calls over the weekend to rush down to San Carlo restaurant and harass the Champions. This was where Manchester United, after gaining the 0-0 draw against Arsenal necessary to secure the Premier League title, were dining. San Carlo was followed by a party in the Living Room. Then breakfast in the Koffee Pot in the Northern Quarter – maybe not.

By the way those spam fritters are what actually caused the split between the two, not a lot of people know that. They also caused Mark Anthony and Cleopatra to fall out. Cleopatra loved them but Mark Anthony preferred a fried egg sunnyside up and was totally against processed meat. It was a big shame.

That reminds me of Stuart Maconie's assertion in "Pies and Prejudice"; "Why do Woolybacks and proper Scousers hate plastic Scousers so much? One of 'em robbed your Gran's telly"

GordoMay 18th 2009.

Don't be so quick as to discount the Koffee Pot JS, Gordo was having breakfast in there one Sunday and found himself sat next to Rio Ferdinand and family at ten in the morning.

BBN, "plastic" scousers. From near to Liverpool, but not Liverpool; Frodsham, Ormskirk, Huyton, etc. Putting on a heightened "scouse" accent, trying to be gangsta". That kinda thing.

What is a 'plastic' Scouser according to Stuart Maconie? I'm very interested with being a Scouser myself. I was in Mojo on Saturday Emma. Owen wasn't but I did pass on the message that you said hello.

You should report them. I would. The benefit system makes me completely sick...but please let's not get started on that subject because I'll get all would up and get carried away and then probably told off.

If you are caught committing benefit fraud then you are prosecuted, possibly even jailed. So why aren't these disgusting thieving MP's getting the same treatment?? I'd love to see them all banged up. I heard one of them the other day saying he didn't realise he was over-claiming, and that it was an "administration error". Bollocks

They both have City season tickets btw. Who pays for that? As a tax-paying Red, that's just offensive.

Broken Britishers NeighbourMay 18th 2009.

Anybody want to buy a telly or Ipod or stereo or jewellery? All needs to be gone by 5.30 when Broken Britisher gets home and finds out how we can afford coke and season tickets. Aaah, this is the life. Back to bed I think. Job done for today.

Descartes: As one of those who will have the choice to vote for Hazel Blears next year or not, can you explain to me the alternative which doesn't involve a wasted vote?

Dave MartinMay 18th 2009.

If Blair had been enough of a democrat to implement the Jenkins review we'd have PR now, and a meaningful choice when voting in these difficult circumstances.

emma graceMay 18th 2009.

Took me a while to figure that one out! Thanks D, hope you're well!

You're right Gordo. I was in there and I was sat next to the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Katie Price who all trying to thrash things out. Peter Andre was buying some spam fritters.
