Monday 19 October: naked truth at Airport, railing against dogs, Addy for the kids, bus drivers’ strike

Published on October 19th 2009.

AIRPORT’S XRAYS ARE BANNED FROM SCANNING children over fears it could breach laws protecting under-18s. The full-body scans, unveiled earlier this month in Terminal 2, are aimed at revealing hidden weapons or explosives, but also show people's bodies. The scans have been temporarily stopped for young people while legal advice is sought “over the grey area”, said the airport, after Action on Rights for Children claim the security measure could break the Protection of Children Act 1978.

A TRAPPED DOG WAS RESCUED by firefighters in Ashton-under-Lyne after its head got stuck in railings. Rocky, the German shepherd, had to be freed with a mechanical jack after fire crews were called to playing fields off Norman Road at 1.30am on Sunday. A fire service spokeswoman said Rocky was unhurt and went home with his owner.

THE MARK ADDY DRAFTS IN THE UNEMPLOYED to renovate the River Irwell’s iconic pub. The renovated Mark Addy will be opened with a special VIP event at the end of the month, with twelve 16-19 year-olds from the Job Club to Construction, run by Connexions Salford, being recruited to prepare the pub for a new era. Executive chef Robert Owen said it was “great” to be working with local youngsters.

BUS DRIVERS STAGE THE LATEST STRIKE in an ongoing row over pay. About 800 First Bus employees, all members of the Unite union, are taking action in Bury, Bolton and Wigan. Transport bosses are warning passengers to expect disruption, although some limited services are being run.
