Wednesday 9 April: Cross-atlantic congestion, Urbis wonderwall and Ronaldo recieves Roma apology

Published on April 9th 2008.

ANTI-congestion campaigners in Manchester are celebrating because a pay-to-drive scheme has been quashed... in New York. The scheme in one of the most congested cities in the world would have meant drivers would pay $8 between 6am-6pm on weekdays. Manchester Against Road Tolls have said that the rejection of the proposal on the other side of the Atlantic is a major boost for the world anti-congestion charging camp.

URBIS is opening its wall to aspiring artists and designers. The huge glass facade is to become the Diesel Wall as part of an international art project. Entries for the wall design can include painting, photography, video, performance, light, sound, text and experimental concepts including 3D.From Thurs 3 April, the competition slogan 'I could be yours' will be emblazoned on the exterior of Urbis. The competition closes on Sun 18 May.

RECORD numbers of people in Greater Manchester have signed up to vote, according to new figures. The Ministry of Justice reports that by the end of 2007, the number of people voting in Greater Manchester increased by 29,399. This has contributed to the national figure of 46m registered voters- the highest number ever recorded.

AHEAD of their clash with Roma at Old Trafford tonight, it seems Christiano Ronaldo and Roma midfielder David Pizarro may have buried the hatchet. Pizarro accused Ronaldo of being arrogant and bigheaded, but Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has since apologised, saying the comments were inspired by the “bitter taste of defeat”.
