Wednesday 24 June: swine flu in Greater Manchester, pensioner power and a deserter becomes hero

Published on June 24th 2009.

A PUPIL at a Bury high school has been confirmed as having swine flu. Three staff members and 47 children have been sent home from Derby High School after the pupil displayed symptoms. Bury council have said the school “will remain operational as normal” and is acting on the advice from the NHS. The pupil is making a good recovery at home.

A SOLDIER shot in World War 1 for desertion has had his name added to a roll of honour in Bolton. Private James Smith was executed by firing squad in 1917, despite suffering shell shock after nearly being killed in Somme the previous year. The Government pardoned Pte Smith and 300 other soldiers in 2006 as “there was little understanding of their condition at the time”, with Bolton council “delighted” to make the addition to their honour roll.

A 75-YEAR OLD great granddad has fought of knife wielding thugs after they tried to break into his home. The three men tried to force their way in at Eric Dean’s back door but he astonishingly held the door closed until police arrived 10 minutes later. The pensioner from Ashton said, “I don’t know where I found the strength”. Police are appealing for information.

TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN PAID to the vet trampled by a herd of cows as she walked her dogs. Described as “a much respected friend” by her partner at Willows Veterinary Group, Liz Crowsley, 49, died instantly on Sunday. Ms Crowsley leaves behind a mother and brother.

This n that wisdom: It is better to trip over with your feet than with your tongue.

Taken from the free calendar available at This 'n' That, Soap Street, Northern Quarter. Those curry masters are so very, very sagacious. How does this wisdom rate? 7/10

Yes yes, remain operational and keep spreading the disease. They should quarrantine anyone that's been in contact with the infected until they're sure the lurgy hasn't been passed on.

I don't mind being corrected - my response could've been clearer; with proper care, even vulnerable groups survive.

What is city panning?

BoredofitallJune 24th 2009.

I love this site. Castlefield/Cas is the utmost expert in everything I wish to know. City panning, PR, swine flu, water taxis, restaurants, music, etc., etc. If I need a very opinionated opinion, I know where to come next time

For Bordeo: I believe city panning would be something done from a balcony! Seriously though, grow up and stop just coming on this site to abuse me, it's a bit silly now ;)

Doctor, your diagnosis on who swine flu is lethal to is wrong. In areas it has been lethal it's young fit adults who have been the majority of the fatalities. However the effect in this country seems to be little more than the normal flu (famous last words!), and so you're correct the school should not be shut.

I'm not a 'friend' of cas etc but the guy with the long name above, all they seem to do on this site is comment on that ranter! Do you go on this site to search that person? If I was them I'd either be flattered or call the freak police. Weirdo.
