Monday 17 March: Northern Quarter drought, Rail passengers unhappy bunnies and Sven wants to spend

Published on March 17th 2008.

WEST MIDLANDS POLICE are to take over the investigation into the death of Greater Manchester Police chief constable Michael Todd. The force will look into whether problems in Mr Todd’s personal life may have affected his professional duties. An inquiry into his death is already being carried out by North Wales Police on behalf of the coroner, but Greater Manchester Police have requested the second inquiry. Mr Todd’s funeral is expected to be held at Manchester Cathedral.

A NUMBER OF city centre flats were without water for over 14 hours over the weekend. Homes were affected in the Northern Quarter because of Victorian pipe replacement work being carried out by United Utilities. A spokesman said the engineers were not aware the pipes they were working on, supplied the affected apartments on Dorsey Street.

EASTER rail delays are expected for passengers heading south for the long weekend. The Manchester to London Virgin Trains route will be cut short to Birmingham where passengers will have to catch a bus for the rest of the journey. Network Rail was fined £14m this year because of the New Year passenger delays.

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON has announced plans for major spending. The City boss is due to meet owner Thaksin Shinawatra to discuss the Blues’ fortune and future. Following City’s 2-1 win over Tottenham, he now wants the extra spending power to chase star players that could help City reach the Champions League. Names mentioned so far on his list include Thierry Henry and Michael Owen.
