Monday 10 August: Oldham’s ‘two drinks per customer’ policy, eyebrows lifted, Blears’ teenager problems and Bulgarian descent

Published on August 10th 2009.

OLDHAM, which has seen a 200% increase in violence associated with drink in its town centre, has told licensed premises that they must sell alcohol at more than than 75p a unit - about £1.88 for a strong pint of lager. Otherwise bars face new licensing conditions such as customers only being able to buy two drinks at a time and a Tesco meat-counter queuing system.

A STOCKPORT WOMAN has become the first person in the UK to undergo an eyelash transplant. Louise Thomas, 19, had the treatment because she suffers from trichotillomania - obsessive plucking or pulling out hair. The procedure involves taking hair strands from the back of the head, and placing them into cuts in the eyelid. Miss Thomas said the results “are absolutely amazing”.

HAZEL BLEARS’ car was attacked while she was out canvassing for local support yesterday. The Salford MP has insisted the smashed window and two slashed tyres on her Citroen Xsara Picasso was not the work of disgruntled constituents, but one resident said “it was definitely targeted”. Ms Blears said the incident was “teenagers with nothing to do on a hot day”.

PASSENGERS feared for their lives as the jet they were on dropped 25,000 feet before making an emergency landing in Budapest. The Jet2 flight was heading to Manchester from Tel Aviv, at 35,000 feet when cabin pressure was lost and passengers said they could smell burning. The captain told passengers to expect a “rapid descent” but not to be alarmed as the plane was diverted.
