<b>Wednesday 4 February:</b> 70s child abuse compensation, jihad leaflet conviction and let's go back to the 60s

MORE CHILD ABUSE VICTIMS from Manchester children's homes in the 70s and 80s are set to claim compensation against Manchester City Council. Two years ago, 168 people were awarded a total of £2.26m for abuse they suffered at homes including Rosehill in Northenden, Broome House in Didsbury, and Mobberley Boys School in Mobberley, Knutsford.

A WOMAN has admitted producing leaflets which urge people to go abroad and fight a jihad (holy war). Shella Roma, 28, of Oldham, pleaded guilty to dissemination of a terrorist publication at Manchester Crown Court; the first case of its kind in Britain. Roma's publication was shown to police by staff at a printers who were due to be copying the material for wider distribution.

STOCKPORT COUNTY FOOTBALL CLUB has been targeted by armed robbers. Four men armed with a machete, a hammer and axes reportedly ran into the ticket office on Tuesday morning, demanding money. The gang stole a substantial amount of cash before driving off in a stolen Mondeo. Two members of staff suffered minor injuries in the robbery.

THE SIXTIES ARE BACK according to an anthropologist who claims Manchester is experiencing a resurgence in the era. Acclaimed cultural anthropologist Jean Smith said: “ As the credit crunch bites, people seek escapism and view this period through rose tinted glasses.” 39 per cent of Mancunians chose the sixties as the decade they would chose to travel back to (more than any other decade) and 79% chose the mini-skirt as the most iconic fashion item.
