Friday 17 July: Olympic BMX track for Manchester, killer house fires, hit'n'run and sportswear

Published on July 17th 2009.

PROPOSALS for a £24 million national indoor BMX centre at Sportcity in east Manchester have been announced. Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, the 110, 000 sq foot building, adjacent to Manchester Velodrome, will include a 2,000 seater BMX arena. The facilities will offer elite athletes from the British Olympic BMX team plus schools and the wider community an opportunity to access a world-class track.

THE HOUSE FIRE that took the life of a 19-year-old girl has now claimed the life of her two younger brothers. Fire crews were called to the blaze on Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, in the early hours of Thursday morning; three adults and nine children were in the house at time of the fire. Carly Swift died soon after the incident, her brothers aged eight and fourteen, suffered 90% burns and died on Thursday. The parents are being treated in Tameside hospital.

A £10,000 REWARD has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the hit-and-run driver who killed an off-duty policeman. Pc Mike Silcock was hit in Heaton Mersey, last March by a gold BMW coupe said to be driving ‘erratically’. Mr Silcock, 30, died in hospital from head injuries, another officer who was hit survived. It is hoped the £10,000 will “encourage” someone to and come forward with information.

WIGAN-BASED retailer JJB saw its share price end 12% up. This comes after Microsoft owner Bill Gates’s charitable foundation surprisingly increased its stake in the company, just months after JJB reported an annual loss.

welcome to the BMX track at Sports City. But could MCC fix the track in Hulme asap. Incidentally British Cycling ia by far the best National Sports body with everyone from grandma or Olympics medalists covered.Maybe our other national centre in Manchester for Taekwondo, will persuade it;s national body to get its act together, though there a lots of private outfits
