HUNDREDS OF SUSPECTED BURGLARS have been held in a campaign to tackle burglary across Greater Manchester. Police arrested 632 people after raiding 200 properties connected to suspected criminals. They also seized £25,000 in cash and recovered drugs worth an estimated £50,000. The campaign comes after Manchester was dubbed a UK burglary hotspot with 35 incidents for every 1,000 homes.
MANCHESTER CITY COUNCIL IS CRUSHING BIKES in an attempt to rid the city's streets of an “off-road menace”. Council bosses have been seizing the illegal off-road bikes to send out a message that they will not be tolerated. Councillor Jim Battle, council deputy leader, pushed the crusher button at Sportcity, saying, “The message is clear. If you ride an illegal off-road bike in a public place in Manchester, it will be confiscated and crushed."
A SECOND RAIL LINK FROM MANCHESTER TO LIVERPOOL should be electrified to enable electrical trains, according to the Association of Train Operating Companies. The £500m line would take a decade to install, but would allow 85,000 more passengers a day to travel, slashing carbon emissions by 75,000 tonnes.
SWINE FLU VACCINES WILL BE GIVEN TO HEALTH WORKERS in Greater Manchester over the next few weeks. NHS organisations across the North West will receive batches of the jab for frontline staff. Dr Ruth Hussey, north west regional director for public health, said: “It is important that frontline staff who have regular clinical contact with patients and who are directly involved in patient care are vaccinated.”
