Tuesday 7 July: Al Nawaz crawls to court, Manchester man jumps London artwork and swine flu alert at Chorlton school

Published on July 7th 2009.

THE BOSS of a restaurant on curry mile has been fined £12,500 after a court heard it was crawling with cockroaches. The ‘well developed’ infestation was found last summer, in Al Nawaz, Wilmslow Road, following a customer complaint. Restaurant manager, Gopal Dangol, 64, was ordered to pay a £2,500 and its owner, Elite Chain Ltd, was fined £12,500. Each pleaded guilty to hygiene offences.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD MAN is in a critical condition after being viciously attacked. The attack happened on London road, outside the Spar, on Saturday night in Manchester city centre. Eight men were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and violent disorder. They have been bailed until the end of the month. The teenager suffered serious head injuries in what police called a “brutal attack”.

A GREATER MANCHESTER MAN had his few minutes of fame by scaling the plinth at the centre of an art project launch. Anti-smoking protester Stuart Holmes took a running jump on to the 22ft platform just as Antony Gormley's Plinth art project in London's Trafalgar Square was set to raise its first participant into place. Participants are chosen at random by a computer and can do anything they want on the plinth - as long as it is legal.

PUPILS AT A SCHOOL IN CHORLTON-ON-MEDLOCK have been put on swine flu alert. Parents are now watching out for symptoms after a member of staff at St Chrysostom's Primary was diagnosed with a possible case of H1N1 virus.
