Wednesday 27 May: Well done the MEN, Fire Brigade warning, plans for Castlefield move on, Confidential predict the Final score

Published on May 27th 2009.

THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS has stepped up its campaign against the BNP before the European Elections in early June with celebrities endorsing the anti-BNP stance. The extreme right-wing party needs only 8% of the vote to shame the region by gaining one of eight European Parliament seats from the North West. On Tuesday the MEN headlined with the BNPs call for ‘all non-white British people to leave the country’. Confidential backs the MEN campaign all the way.

FIRE BRIGADE BLUES are hitting Greater Manchester. The Fire Service is to cut 26 firefighter jobs by 1 July. According to the Fire Brigades Union this will mean delays in appliances getting to emergencies. The Chief Fire Officer Barry Dixon said the service's average response time of five minutes would remain the same.

THE NEW CASTLEFIELD BOARD MET in Manchester Town Hall yesterday. It included City officials, such as Sir Howard Bernstein, key developers such as Peel Holdings, MOSI director, Steve Davies, Cityco, and residents and businesses (chaired by Confidential editor, Jonathan Schofield). This resulted in the creation of smaller committees to look at maintenance, services, improvements and events. These are to meet within two months and create a timetable of change for the decayed area, which was declared ‘a priority of the Council.’

MANCHESTER UNITED takes on Barcelona tonight. If they win they get a Manchester victory parade tomorrow. If they don’t the city – or the red half at least – doesn’t get to celebrate with team. The Confidential prediction, 3-1, to United.

Manchester Utd fans don't get to celebrate in the city if they don't win!!!! What a travesty I bet they'd be lining up!

I've heard nothing from the BNP in terms of trying to get themselves elected, the only reason I know their running is the masses of colum inches gifted to them by the MEN. Which to me just makes a mindless bunch of facists look like a credibale political party worth considering - condemn them yes but dont make them look like the main event.

Aye Chris, it's horrendous. But a lot of people in this country will believe that rubbish... I love the fact they made that viral internet video thing, with "If you tolerate this..." by the Manics as the music. The Manics pointed out they haven't given permission, deplore the BNP, and that the song is actually about people getting off their backsides to fight fascism :o)

I had some "Don't Vote BNP" stuff posted through my door. Do we really need leaflets for that? Surely people should just, well y'know, know better?

Good point mate. Did anyone get the one which had BNP quotes on it? Something like 'Rape is sex, and women like sex, so rape is ok'... and 'AIDS is a friendly disease because drug users and gays get it'. So wrong, and yet priceless.

Was the new Castlefield meeting advertised? I know many, including myself, who attended the last one a few weeks ago, and were very keen to join the various committees, but were not aware that another meeting was being held. Think it's a pretty sly way of doing it. Being a resident I am very conscious about what happens to Castlfield, what events take place and the general feeling of the area.

Emelie, through Confidential we've organised lots of public meetings so this was an occasion to try and make sure we focussed in on key issues. Therefore it wasn't a public meeting as such but closed to allow action plans to be taken forward. But this in no way excludes residents and other interested parties expressing their points of view and those points being adopted. Email me on jgschofield@btinternet.com if you'd like to contribute.
