Tuesday 17 February: Suicide manual ban, Cornerhouse boycotted, Corrie for sale and stamps with security

Published on February 17th 2009.

A SUICIDE MANUAL which was used by the owner of Manchester's Aqua Bar when he killed himself, should be banned according to a coroner. Nigel Meadows has written to the Home Secretary expressing concern about the book. Benson, who had a history of depression, wrote in his suicide note: “This book didn't encourage me to kill myself. But it stopped me doing it in a way which was dangerous to others. This book is good unless the technique fails in which case I shall be suing.” He died from suffocation and gas inhalation.

MIKE LEIGH, the Oscar nominated film director, has vowed not to visit Manchester's Cornerhouse cinema until bosses pay staff at least the Manchester minimum wage. Leigh, 65, grew up in Broughton, Salford, and used to visit the independent cinema regularly. The cinema has said that as they are a charity, they can't pay workers any more. Both Mike Leigh and fellow director Ken Loach say this is no excuse.

IS CORRIE FOR SALE? Speculation in the Sunday papers has suggested that ITV is considering selling Coronation Street to an independent production company as well as moving Emmerdale's filming to Manchester and closing the Leeds studio. ITV is reportedly preparing to go into financial meltdown when advertising revenues drop by £350m later this year.

ROYAL MAIL HAVE ADDED a new security feature to stamps. The new design will prevent people from reusing stamps by peeling them off envelopes. The stamps will be printed on the same tamper-proof paper that is used for bank notes and are in circulation from today.

Bloody champagne socialists. Happy to be given a leg up by art cinemas and then keen to kick them. Paying an extra quid an hour would mean how many redundancies when you're already struglling, as most arts cinemas constantly are? Maybe giving some money might help...

anonymous:are you living in the real world along with the rest of us? There is a recession on. People are losing their jobs left, right & centre. If the staff quit in opposition to the wage policies then chances are that a) they won't get another job so will be worse off - principles don't pay the bills and b) other people will take their place and satisfy themselves that low wages are often better than no wages!

Did he really 'grow up' visiting the Cornerhouse. My memory was that it was a mucky cinema before becoming a trendy art-house one!

Uhhr, AD the staff at Cornerhouse DO get paid.

Charity in the case of the corner house is not really charity but a not for profit set up so that people can see films that aren't mainstream. If the people who watch those movies are not willing to pay a ticket price that allows the staff looking after them to live then they dont deserve to be seeing the movie in the first place.Besides I suspect that the managers are just hiding behind the Charity status to cover the fact their not compentent enough to run a business that can afford to pay its staff. (and why Man con hasnt asked them what the managers get paid themselves I dont know...)

I must be thick - I'd never heard of the 'Manchester' minimum wage before this. Drake; I agree. I may be harsh but it's an employers' market at the moment - the national minimum wage is once again due to rise in October, why is there even such a thing as the 'Manchester' wage?
