MANCHESTER IS ONE OF 27 cities in the running for the UK’s first ever City of Culture. The list was announced by Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw, who said that Liverpool's success "proves that cultural life most definitely does not begin and end within the M25". Another location has put its name forward, but asked not to be named at this stage, but London and its boroughs were barred from entering the contest.
BUS DRIVERS HAVE GONE ON STRIKE, leading to hundreds of buses being cancelled. Friday's services in Wigan, Bolton and Bury are worst affected by the action of more than 800 First Group workers over a pay freeze. Routes in Trafford, Stockport, Salford and Rochdale are also affected. Today is the first of four planned 24-hour strikes. The next is expected on Monday.
A GROUP OF HOLIDAYMAKERS, including children, are in hospital after the minibus they were travelling in overturned on the way to Manchester Airport. The vehicle landed on its roof after it suffered from a burst tyre near Prestwich yesterday evening. Witnesses at the scene, who rang the emergency services, said there were a "sea of bodies" on the carriageway.
A MANCHESTER ROYAL MARINE who saved the lives of 30-comrades by rugby tackling a would-be suicide bomber in Afghanistan, is to be awarded the Military Cross. Sgt Noel Connolly threw himself at the Taliban fighter, who was loaded with 150lb of explosives, in April. The Queen will present Sgt Connolly with the prestigious award later this year.

at east lancsThen get a job that rewards performance and put all the supposed hard work and effort earning for themselves. These people don't know what hard work is. If I had my way I would send them all out on a second hand door to door, door sales week then they wouldn't be pi$$ing and moaning about not getting a rise. I didn’t get a rise this year or last we cant afford it, but I have a job and I count my lucky stars at the moment that I do. I still have the opportunity to work harder and earn more. I can't stand strikers in this form they should all get a better job if their job doesn't fulfil them. Theyre bus drivers not heart surgeons.I had a friend that was made redundant recently after 35 years service and he said to the boss “I don't know how you can do this, I have worked for you for 35 years”, and his boss quite rightly said “and I have paid you for 35 years. He gets up, brushes himself down and moves on. I for one won’t be bussing it anywhere anymore, the sweaty, rude ignorant ba$tards can free up the bus lanes and let me get to work on time in my car thanks very much!Rant over!
I'm with you Scoteee. Staff at "A Local Uni" are whinging they've been offered just over 3% (on top of their annual increment). So they're going to strike. The difference with the buses tho is that the drivers have been offered a payrise of exactly 0%.
good job we have cars trams and trains then....Fuk em that's what i say.You don't like what you get paid? leave.
This wouldn't have happened in my day.
Ah the brilliance of unions. If only any of us could decide to down tools and go home to blackmail our companies into paying us more money or shutting them down. The world would be a finer place for sure
