Tuesday 8 September: Corrie actress finds dead body, MIF hailed a success and the National Football Museum moves to Manchester

Published on September 8th 2009.

A CORONATION STREET ACTRESS has found a dead man in a van. Samia Smith, who plays Maria Connor in the soap, called police after seeing a 26-year-old dead man in a parked Vauxhall Combi in Sale on Sunday. It is believed a barking dog alerted Mrs Smith, who is heavily pregnant, and her husband Matthew to the van. Greater Manchester Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

THE MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL has been hailed a success by the council. The 17-day festival in July saw leading names from the world of art, music and performance flock to the city, including Prima Donna opera by musician Rufus Wainwright and also a collaboration between Mercury Prize winners Elbow and the Halle Orchestra. Manchester City Council leader, Sir Richard Leese, said: “This was a tremendous success and an exceptional festival that attracted critical acclaim."

THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL MUSEUM will be moving to Manchester. The world famous attraction will move from Preston to Urbis in the city centre next year, in a move that will cement Manchester’s reputation as Britain’s capital of football. The move comes as authorities have been struggling to keep up with mounting costs and pin-pointed the Urbis as a ‘natural location’.

A GRAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED for trying to smuggle a phone, hidden inside her bra, into Strangeways. Manchester magistrates’ court gave Emma MacDonald, 52, a suspended three-month jail sentence after failing to believe MacDonald’s claims that she never intended to pass the phone to her son.
