Tuesday 29 December: Pub landlords might strike, lost on the moors and community service for an ex-mayor

Published on December 29th 2009.

PUB LANDLORDS are to vote in the New Year whether to take industrial action against pubcos. Half of Britain's pubs are owned by pubcos and the GMB union says they require landlords to buy beer at a premium rate while charging an up-front fee to publicans and monthly rent. GMB national officer Paul Maloney said: "The aim of the action is to secure negotiation with pubcos to achieve substantial cuts in wholesale prices and a resolution to grievances experienced by the tied tenants at the hands of middle managers and their agents."

LOST IN A ROCHDALE MOORLAND wilderness a walker had to be rescued after a stroll with his dog above Watergrove Reservoir at Wardle. Fortunately a mobile phone saved him when he called the emergency services. Police found the man before the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue team were required.

A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY has been charged after putting a gun to a womans head in Chortonville home. The aggravated burglary took place shortly after 3.30am on Wednesday (23 December), at a house on The Willows.

AN EX-MAYOR OF STOCKPORT (from 2005) is to serve 50 hours' community service for causing the death of a passenger in a car she was driving. Sixty-six year old Cllr Shan Alexander, caused Mallory Perry's death, also 66, by driving without due care and attention. They had been en route to Capesthorne Hall, in a convoy to attend an event for blind and partially-sighted people. Cllr Alexander will retain her membership of the council.

You can't blame pubco landlords. They're being squeezed dry.
