Thursday 21 May: Passengers pass out, Spend a penny at M&S and no cards in the credit crunch

Published on May 21st 2009.

TWO TRAM PASSENGERS FAINTED during a 40 minute delay. The 8.10am service from Brooklands stopped at Cornbrook and didn't depart again until 9am. Passengers reported that they weren't informed of what was going on and there was no air conditioning in the carriages. Greater Manchester Passenger Transport said people could not get off the tram due to safety reasons but the problem is now fixed.

MARKS & SPENCER PENNY BAZAAR caused hundreds of shoppers to queue along Market Street to spend a penny. The store is offering dozens of products for just 1p in celebration of the stores £125th anniversary. The sale began at 9am yesterday, however shoppers, who were allowed to select five items each, had been queuing since 7am.

CLINTON CARDS is the latest retailer to put stores into administration. 223 of the company's 'Birthdays' stores are feeling the effects of the economic environment, experiencing £7m annual losses. The Bury-based chain say they will be continuing to trade whilst they explore all options for the future of the business.

SCIENTISTS AT MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY have found that increased levels of vitamin D, obtained from exposure to sun or eating oily fish, could help keep our brains in top condition as we age. The study, published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, compared the brain agility of 3,133 men aged 40 to 79 at eight test centres across Europe. The research found that men with higher levels of vitamin D performed consistently better than those with lower levels.

This 'n' That wisdom*: I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday

Very Annoyed of Heaton ParkMay 21st 2009.

Things to ask the Metrolink boss about:Why haven't they reduced their ticket prices to reflect the reduced service? I have to get off two stops early now to get to work, but I'm paying the same amount. A scandal. Why are they so expensive anyway? I pay £64 a month for a ticket and I'm only travelling from Heaton Park to the city centre - it's too costly, particularly regarding the standard of service provided. Why have they stopped doing double trams in the morning on the Bury line? We're packed in like sardines; it's unpleasant and unhygienic. You'd expect better considering the price of the tickets. And if piggy flu takes hold, it'll be a health and safety hazard to have so many people jammed together in one place. Can they make the exit from the Victoria station platform bigger - we have to queue to get out at the moment because it's about a metre wide and there's a tram load of people all trying to get through.

YorkieMay 21st 2009.

More travel woes - the case of the disappearing train. The 17.07 to Scarborough was on time according to the "information" board on Platform 4 at Oxford Road yesterday... and was still shown as "on time" at 17.13 when it was replaced by the Stoke train that really did turn up. No Scarborough train and no "apology" or explanation from TransPennine Express (sic).
