Thursday 13 March: Police chief death inquest opens, GHD advert flattened and Hatton heads home

Published on March 13th 2008.

THE INQUEST into the death of Greater Manchester chief constable Michael Todd is to be opened today. The body of Mr Todd, 50, was found on Snowdon on Tuesday. A post-mortem has shown no obvious sign of death. Toxicology test results are due later today. Police are also examining text messages he sent before he died to establish the state of mind he was in.

POST OFFICES across the region could be taken over by local authorities. Manchester, Tameside, Lancashire and Rochdale councils are all considering the takeover in a bid to retain local post offices. A total of 2,500 out of 14,000 branches are due to be closed across the country. Essex county council has set aside £1.5 million of council taxpayers' money to save 15 local branches. Greater Manchester now plans to follow suit.

A MANCHESTER ADVERTISING AGENCY has defended a controversial advertisement they created. The commercial for GHD hair straighteners was banned after complaints about eroticised images of women apparently in prayer. The ads included women praying their beautiful hair would attract men and part of the Lord’s Prayer with the slogan ‘a new religion for hair.’ Didsbury agency, TBWA has said they didn’t mean to cause offence.

RICKY HATTON is to return to Manchester on Saturday 24 May to fight for his IBO light-welterweight title. Hatton will be up against Mexico’s Juan Lazcano at the City of Manchester Stadium. He aims to quash speculation that his boxing career is over following his defeat by Floyd Mayweather.
